Homes in Mercer County, MO run heat about eight months a year, from October through May. A boiler running through a heating season that long cycles its burner and ignition system hard, and those parts accumulate wear in ways the heat exchanger and circulator pump simply do not. When a contractor opens a boiler here on a repair call, the ignition assembly and burner components show the history of that load plainly: carbon buildup, cracked igniters, worn electrodes. Pipe and vessel problems exist, but the cycling parts give out first.

Cast iron sections crack, flue passages scale with mineral deposits, and relief valves seize in ways that only show up once a contractor opens the system. Half the homes in Mercer County, Missouri were built in 1970 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A boiler running in a house that old has been cycling through Missouri winters long enough that the failure is almost never the single part that tripped the fault code. What the contractor actually finds inside decides whether the job is a gasket and a bleed or a section replacement, and parts availability for equipment that old varies by manufacturer and model.

The Parts of a Boiler a Contractor Checks First

The boiler itself sits in the basement or a mechanical room and is the piece a contractor goes to first. It heats water and sends it out through the system. When a boiler is underperforming or failing to fire at all, the heat exchanger, burner assembly, and ignition components inside that cabinet are where the diagnosis starts.

From the boiler, pipes carry hot water to radiators or baseboard units positioned along the walls of each room. Each radiator has a valve that controls flow, and those valves are common failure points when one room heats unevenly or not at all. The circulator pump, which moves water through the loop, and the expansion tank, which manages pressure, sit close to the boiler and are also part of what a contractor examines.

The drawing shows a typical boiler system layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components and connections apply to the specifics of your house.
